Description : Thirty-seven figures of mixed description (eighteen large and a row of nineteen small in the bottom left of the painting): some of the large figures wear cloaks, skirts, or skins and carry sticks, two hold what resemble pots or shields, one at the bottom of the painting holds what looks like a thong in its hand, and another two figures in the top right of the painting appear to have lines coming from their chest-regions. A figure resembling a bird (ostrich) occupies the bottom middle of the painting. "Rocks on the Banks of the Nciba (Lower Zwart Kei) 16th April 1870." [Two joined halves.]

Description in published source : p.73: "41. Same [Longreach, banks of the Lower Black Kei, Cape]. 1/7 lin." "The central girl is in pink. The remainder are dark maroon. The ostrich is black. Note the amusing pattern of crossed legs in the smaller sketch, bottom left. This is the only painting I know with pottery (top centre) depicted." (Goodwin)
