Description : [OS - two joined halves] Thirty-three figures. Most bear weapons including sticks, clubs, and a group of four figures on the right hand side of the painting bear bows and arrows and quivers. Two antelope in the centre of the painting and an oval of thumb-print sized black dots at the bottom middle. "From cave in Eland's Kloof Vecht Kop Spruit Orange River O.F.S." [Two joined halves.]
Verso : "58"
Description in published source : p.38: '6. Elandskloof, Vechtkop Spruit, Zastron, O.F.S. 1/7 lin.' "Clearly several unrelated paintings. Remnants of men in pale faded red survive, one has a digging-stick. Over them have been painted two pleasant elands; the leader in red and white, the other in orange and white. The rest of the central group is later and consists of men, mainly in dark red through two are in yellow. At first sight the animals appear to be the focus of the picture, but a moment’s thought will show that we have an independent battle between Hottentots with spears and Bushmen with bows. The small group at the top is in dark red with black markings; perhaps reinforcements for the Hottentots, perhaps a group depicting their formation before the battle. The bottom panel is not related. It is all in black, and the finger-dots probably represent a cattle-kraal or a hunting or fishing trap." (Goodwin)
